The Dive Friends Bonaire IDC program not only trains you to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, it gives you the opportunity to become a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer right away!
When can I do my Instructor Development Course?
The next IDC will take place in 2020 (dates to be confirmed). During the seventeen days of the course, you will become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, an Emergency First Response Instructor, and earn five instructor specialties that will make you a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer!
What shall I do to be prepared?
The theory exams that you’ll be taking during the Instructor Examination are a great deal more in depth than those you passed in order to become a PADI Divemaster. You will need to use your Encyclopedia of Diving Knowledge to complete all of the reviews in the Diving Knowledge Workbook before you start the IDC. The more prepared you are, the more you can focus on teaching.
What materials do I need?
In order to comply with PADI Standards, you are required to have Instructor training materials as well as the manuals and exams for all of the courses that you are required to teach. All mandatory items that you don’t already have from your PADI Divemaster training are available from Dive Friends Bonaire in the IDC Crew-Pack that includes a PADI backpack.
How long will it take?
The short answer… about 3 weeks (if you have all of the pre-requisites).
The long answer…. Candidates are requested to be on Bonaire at least 2 days prior to the IDC for a complimentary preparatory session to make sure that all your dive knowledge and skills are ready for the IDC. This preparatory session will start 2 days before the start of the course..
During the 9 days of your instructor development course, you’ll apply your diving knowledge and skills while learning to use the PADI System of diver education in the classroom and in the water.
You will learn to manage and adapt the PADI System of diver education to individual student needs. As a PADI OWSI, you can conduct the entire range of PADI diver courses from Discover Scuba Diving to Divemaster.
We’ll also be refreshing your rescue skills (Rescue Skill #7 from the Rescue Diver course will be evaluated during the IE). The IDC format will focus upon workshops (like knot tying, descent and CESA workshops) and interaction, while utilizing the PADI Instructor Manual and the PADI Guide to Teaching.
All of this training will help to prepare you for your upcoming Instructor Exam. The Instructor Examination (IE) takes place over 2 days. An independent examiner from PADI will visit Bonaire to administer the exams.
There will be tests on your general water and diving skills, your academic knowledge, and on your teaching presentations in the classroom as well as in confined and open water environments. For certification as a PADI Instructor you will need to pass all parts of the IE.
Emergency First Response Instructor is a pre-requisite to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor and takes about 2 days to complete. This interactive instructor training program incorporates CPR and First Aid (Primary and Secondary Care) and is included as part of our curriculum. If you already hold this certification, no problem, you’ll have two extra days off to enjoy diving on Bonaire or relax.
Finally, in two extra days you will earn five instructor specialties. This allows you to become a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer right after becoming an Open Water Scuba Instructor!
As an eco-conscious dive centre focused on sustainable dive practices, we offer the following five instructor specialties: Deep Diver, Enriched Air Nitrox, Fish ID, Underwater Naturalist, and Dive Against Debris.
What can I expect to pay?
The total cost for the training program is $2900. This includes IDC course materials, EFR course materials, Instructor Examination, five instructor specialties, and PADI Certification fees.
What can I do after the IDC program?
After the successful completion of the IDC program, new dive instructors can take advantage of Dive Friend’s post-IE internship for four to eight weeks (or longer, if desired).
This internship provides the new dive instructor first-hand experience by watching and assisting the Dive Friends Bonaire staff instructors. There is no cost to the candidate for taking advantage of this internship.
